How do you remember all the information you learn? You participate in it!

Written by Tamara Maric

When I attended REBarCamp West End, my goal was to not only listen to valuable tips and discussions but to remember and convey the useful information. According to the Old Chinese proverb, this blog will be beneficial for both you and me: “What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; what I do, I understand”.

In other words, I am going to summarize some information that I learned that you might potentially choose to partake in.

Would you Change your Wardrobe to increase your Sales? - Ronn James

One speech that left an impact on me was about hand language, body language, and appearance. Ronn James asked his audience: “Would you change your wardrobe to increase your sales?”. Most people nodded their heads, and the reason, I presume, is because it is quite simple to do so!

“What is the colour of power?” he asked. “Red”, a woman exclaimed. With an impressed facial expression, he proceeded to ask: “What colour does Wonder Woman wear? What colour is Superman’s cape?”. Coincidence?

He left us off on an excellent note - an excellent study done on jaywalkers. The study’s independent variable was either a poorly dressed man, or a clean cut well dressed man. What the experimenter(s) were looking for was the dependent variable – how many random people (not part of the experiment) will jaywalk along with the two men. The well-dressed man had a minimum of three people jaywalking with him at once! The reason? “He just looked like he knew what he was doing”. Would you change your wardrobe to increase your sales?

What to do when Networking – Debra Trappen

Debra Trappen touched on the topic of networking (just in time for the holiday season!) and how one should behave at interactive events. She trusts that events shouldn’t be about small talk; talking about the weather is a big no-no in Debra’s books. She says “Enough with the small talk! Get personal, ask about their passions, then introduce them to others with similar interests!”. There is nothing wrong with getting personal; you never know what you can learn about someone and how it may benefit you.

She believes in listening more, and talking less. Debra says that the person talking more feels better about the conversation. So don’t make it all about you, be chatty, and ask questions that’ll engage the other members.

Debra's offered great advice on how we can all give back and enrich the communities we live in.  Some of the great ideas she had included:

  • Touchbase with contacts
  • Hold a client appreciation christmas party
  • Do pop by visits
  • Give back and volunteer time at homeless shelters, wishes for children, literacy programs, become a tutor, visit hospitals, decorate home for elderly (I loved this idea), hold an ugly sweater contest

She left us off with an attractive and rather humorous takeaway when it comes to social media posts during networking events: “No posting on social after nine or two glasses of wine”!

The 3 Instincts of your Clients that you should learn – Sunny Daljit

Sunny Daljit had a rather psychological viewpoint on how you should connect with your clients. He brushed on topics such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Human Instincts.

Sunny pinpointed 3 instincts that you should look for in your clients: social, sexual, and self-preserving. “What is the number one feature that the sexual looks for in a home?” he asked. The answer: a fireplace.  When your clients are self-preserved, they are all about closure. The number one feature self-preserved people look for is a fence around their back yard.

He pinpointed a statistic that shocked some in the room. A few jaws dropped when Mr. Daljit stated “there are 40 000 real estate agents in the GTA and of those, 30 000 make 3 sales a year or less”. To add on top of that, the amount that makes 3 sales a month is 400 agents – 1%!

My opinion on REBarcamp West End:

Rebarcamp is an event that I would highly recommend to not only agents, but any individual looking to find out more information on the focused strategies to take your business to the next level.  Thanks to the organizers for creating a phenomenal day of learning.  We can't wait until Rebarcamp West End 2015!
