The title of this post seems a little bit out of place at first glance, especially on a real estate review site. Having a client tell you that you did something wrong (especially when you have tried so hard to accommodate all their requests) can be hurtful. However, a negative review might be exactly what you need to understand what went wrong. Here are five reasons why:
1. Get a Better Understanding of Yourself
Have you ever heard of the Johari Window? It was a simple tool developed by psychologists in the 1950s to be used for personal development and improve self-awareness. There may be ‘blind-spots’ in your professional (and perhaps even personal) behaviour that might be impeding your progress. A negative review might not be the nicest thing to deal with, but it may give you insight into areas that could be improved.
2. Get a Better Understanding of your Client
Canada’s population is extremely diverse. As such, it’s almost impossible to homogenize any group of people. A negative review could help you gain insight into a client that you may have struggled to connect with.
3. It Gives you a Chance to Make it Right
Taking the time to respond to the negative review and address the concerns of your clients will certainly give you an opportunity to open up dialogue. A genuine commitment to resolving (or at least hearing out) their problems could go a long way. While consumers can be very quick to let you know when they are unhappy, they can be just as forgiving when they see you making an effort.
4. They’re Good for the Real Estate Industry in Canada
Recently, certain publications took a strong stance against negative book reviews. While the theory behind posting exclusively positive reviews seemed plausible, this could allow bad business practices to go undetected as ‘trends’. If clients are given a space in which they can safely provide constructive reviews on their real estate agents, these trends could be identified and eliminated organically.
5. They Give an Accurate Assessment
Consumers these days are acutely aware of the different methods that companies use to obtain and maintain an edge in the competitive business environment. Negative reviews are seen as a necessary evil to help paint a complete picture of the product or service being assessed. Attempts to completely prevent any disparaging remarks may work for some time but can prove costly.
